MacMillan, Sheldon
October 29, 1935 – March 17, 2013

Sheldon MacMillan passed away at the Claresholm General Hospital on Sunday, March 17, 2013. Sheldon was born on the family farm in Lochiel Township, Glengarry County, Ontario, on October 29, 1935, the second of seven children of Hugh Roy and Janet Isabel MacMillan.

Sheldon is survived by his wife Barbara, son Craig, daughter-in-law Joanne, granddaughter Lindsey Catherine and grandson Ewen Roy of Manotick, Ontario. Sheldon is also survived by his brothers, Duncan and Donald Alexander, Alexandria, Ontario, Leslie (Marilyn), Mississauga, Ontario, and sisters Shirley Nixon (Ransom) and Jean Sproule (Irwin), Ottawa, Ontario, and numerous nieces and nephews. Sheldon was predeceased by his infant son, Fredrick Roy (1964), brother Earl (1989), father Hugh Roy (1975), and mother Janet (1992).

Then and now, Glengarry is widely known for its Scottish culture and tradition. Sheldon’s family first settled in Glengarry in 1793. Sheldon grew up on the farm, but at the age of 17, felt the urge to go west, as his older brother Earl and other young men from Glengarry had done as part of harvest excursions and finding employment. Sheldon worked in a variety of occupations, including farming, trucking, logging, oil exploration and drilling across western Canada, including some very remote areas in northern British Columbia and Alberta. Eventually, he found himself in Camrose, Alberta, where he met and married Barbara in 1957, his wife of 55 years.

In 1963, Sheldon and Barbara moved to Claresholm with their son Craig. Sheldon worked in a number of jobs in Claresholm, eventually settling in as a self-employed carpenter, which he successfully pursued for many years before “retiring”, if, indeed, there was such a state for him, as he remained active throughout his life. Sheldon enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, motorcycling and camping in the foothills and mountains, a passion he passed to his son and grandchildren. Sheldon particularly enjoyed visiting the family cabin located on a remote part of Horsefly Lake in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of British Columbia.

At Sheldon’s request, there will be no funeral service. Donations, in Sheldon’s memory, may be made to a charity of your choice.
