Sherman, James Lloyd
March 20, 1956 – October 20, 2013
It is with profound sadness that the family of Jim Sherman announces his passing on Sunday, October 20th, 2013 at the age of 57 in Calgary, at the Agape Hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Sharon, of 32 years and their 3 children, Jared (Natalie) of Airdrie, Jaci (Dan) Scott of Airdrie, Ashley (Reg) of Calgary. Jim is also survived by his parents, Bill and Eleanor Sherman of Claresholm and one sister, Bonnie (Wayne) McIntyre of Barons, mother-in-law Fran Towler of Claresholm, father in-law Jim Haryett of Qu’Appelle Sk., brothers and sisters-in-law Ian (Keri) Haryett of Delburne, Debi (Dave) Fowler of Toronto, ON., Heather (Arne) Berger of Nanton, Elan (Scott) Lees of Airdrie, and Ladd (Lisa) Haryett of Red Deer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was born in Claresholm on March 20th, 1956. He completed grades 1 through 12 in Claresholm and went on to Olds College where he received his diploma in Agriculture. He enjoyed and played a wide variety of sports, especially participating in and following rodeo. He enjoyed skiing and also played hockey while growing up.
After college he continued farming and ranching with his father and in 1980 met his true love, Sharon Haryett, from Qu’Appelle Saskatchewan, who had recently moved to Claresholm to teach. They were married August 1, 1981 and a year later Jim and Sharon built a new home west of Claresholm where they happily raised their family.
They raised purebred Herefords for many years and in 1985 they purchased the family farm and continued farming and ranching in the Foothills. In 1998 Jim began manufacturing custom built stock trailers. He built them from the ground up and was meticulous about turning out a flawless end product for his customers. After several years Jim decided to take more college courses. These courses enabled him to enter the oil patch, where he worked as a pipeline inspector for CJB Ventures. This took him to many different sites in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. When Sharon retired early from teaching she was able to join him in recent years. Jim truly enjoyed this segment of his life.
Jim was an incredibly devoted family man. He immersed himself in his children’s activities. He helped coach hockey, and was involved with his children in 4H and High School Rodeo for many years. He supported and encouraged his children through all their activities, from music and sports to rodeo and their post-secondary endeavors. He loved ranch life and valued country living and instilled an honest and hardworking ethic in his children. Anyone whose heart has been touched by this gracious and loving man will greatly miss his presence in their lives. His kind and gentle ways will forever be remembered by his wife and family and all who knew him. He truly was a magnificent man.
A service will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Claresholm Community Centre (59 Avenue and 8 Street West) at 2 PM.
