Margret Jean Challand, known as “Billie” to those who knew and loved her, passed away peacefully in her sleep while in palliative care at the South Health Campus in Calgary, Alberta, Friday morning, April 3rd, 2015 at the age of 94. She was preceded by her husband, Gilbert Clarence Challand, known as “Gib” and her son Gilbert John Challand, known as “Gibbie”. She is survived by her daughter Gail of Millarville, AB; grandsons John (Shirley and great-grandchildren Tyler and Lindsey) and Sloan Challand (and great-grandchildren Cole and Aressana) all from Calgary. Billie is also survived by Gibbie’s children: Dean Challand (Dayna and great-grandchildren Zakery, and Jarrid) from Claresholm, AB; Nicole (Mark Lee and great-grandchildren Tegan, Denton Sandy and Jordyn Sandy) of Cranbrook, BC; and Veronique (Anthony Bennett with great-grandchildren Harlee (Kate with great-great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Alexis) and Vincent, all from Brisbane, Australia.

Billie was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on October 17th, 1920. She was the daughter of John and Vina (Bullied) Ralston. Her father was employed by the United Grain Growers of Alberta. Her father was transferred many places throughout Alberta. It was in Rimbey where she met Gib her husband and they married in 1938. Both Gail and Gibbie were born in Rimbey, Alberta. Their first home was in Leedale, Alberta, living on his father’s original homestead. They sold the land and moved to Claresholm in 1948. Billie was employed for many years with Marshall Wells Hardware in Claresholm and also worked at a local bank and also at the Claresholm Care Center. Billie and Gib enjoyed travelling near and far. They travelled to Alaska, throughout continental US, Hawaii and Fiji. Billie also enjoyed spending time at their acreage west of Claresholm where family would often meet for barbeques and hunting trips. Billie’s home was full of wonders she collected; whether a fresh antique find or interesting crystals or fossils. She loved to visit with friends while browsing through rummage sales, local farmer’s markets and auction centers. Billie moved from Claresholm after the flooding in 2005 to Gail’s acreage where she stayed until September, 2014 upon moving into Tudor Manor in Okotoks.

A viewing will be held at Leyden’s Funeral Home in Claresholm, Alberta (4079-1 Street West) on Wednesday, April 8th, 2015 from 9:30-11:00, followed by funeral services at Leyden’s.
